You won’t find a better value in Europe - not for an experience of this quality - nor a better reason than now to get away from it all. Just be sure to tell your family and friends to join you. Because today will pass... but the memories you share will last a lifetime.
Imagine, if you will, a small alpine village in Bavaria, Germany where once each decade the villagers come together to put on a play, performed repeatedly over the course of five months.
First created in 1634, the Oberammergau Passion Play is a result of a vow made to God long ago. The villagers prayed to be spared from the ravages of the bubonic plague; in exchange - they would put on the Passion Play once every 10 years.
The play, depicting the life and death of Jesus, is now performed in the years ending in zero, except in 1984 which marked the 350th anniversary. It involves over 2,000 actors, singers, instrumentalists and technicians - all residents of the village.
In 2010, the work will premiere on Saturday, May 15 and will be staged for a total of 102 days. 2010 also marks a change in presentation.
The Oberammergau play runs for about 7 hours. For the first time, the performance will begin in the afternoon and the second part will be performed in the evening. The first part begins at 2:30 pm and ends at 5:00 pm; part two begins at 8:00 pm and ends at 10:30 pm. The seating can hold up to 4,700 people.
Now that is human spirit propelled by divine intervention!
